A brief overview of the problem is that there is a photograph of a famous celebrity by the name of Tom Hanks who greatly impacts many people’s lives and most likely the decisions they make is shown in the photograph wearing a navy colored t-shirt that was falsely altered into saying “KEEP AMERICA TRUMPLESS” with a huge picture of the American flag in the middle of the shirt; the original image was of Hanks just wearing a plain navy colored loose t-shirt. “Reuters has previously addressed digitally altered images that appear to show celebrities, including Hanks, wearing t-shirts with political messages”. “Reuters News has a fact-checking unit within its editorial department. The principal aim of this unit is to fact-check visual material and claims posted on social media. The fact checking producers in this unit report their findings on a section of the Reuters.com website.” I think that regardless of what website decides to put whatever images out there it is best to add the specific information such as where the picture was found, where it was taken, when it was taken as well as how this came about to become such a large topic. Somebody as famous as Tom Hanks is not the only person who was put in an uncomfortable position showcasing something that he never actually wore and may not even truly believe in. “One user shared the altered image on Twitter on Sept. 14, 2022, with a caption that reads: “Is that you tome [sic] hanks?…how about we keep america hanksless!!!!…” (here). The tweet had more than 2,000 likes at the time of writing.” By something like this happening can tarnish someone’s career that they have worked towards for a very long time. This also just goes to show you how manipulative people can be through taking very famous celebrities, putting a fake news report out there and so many people around the world will believe in what they are seeing on the internet and run with that information that will spread like wildfire. Eventually, people won’t know what to believe anymore because there will be so many fake stories out there. Typically, people can easily come up with a fake news story and be able to add anything they want to it to make it sound more interesting because it is fake, but they don’t think about the fact that they can ruin someone’s life with it.

    Dear friend,

Something I want to share with you before you get involved in the whole social media world is that your privacy is something you should take very seriously. No matter what social media platform you choose to download and get involved with it is important to know and understand these things. One is to always be aware of the people you let follow your page, two is how often you are posting your location to the public, and three how many times you give out your username or password to someone. Whatever the case may be just always be aware of what you choose to post and who you let follow you. There has been an update to Instagram recently when you download the newest IOS where if you post your general location for people to see if they want to they can stalk your exact location. As far as the other apps go, some that are very popular include Snapchat and TIktok. Snapchat can easily be found if you have your snap maps on for your followers to see; though you can make it so only a select few people of your choice can view your snapchat location. For Instagram however, once you post your general location there is no going back; no matter what if someone wants to find your exact location they will be able to. As far as other apps go, like Tiktok for example, people can see everything you post if you are not careful with who you let follow you. Any post you make will automatically be shared with everyone even if they are not following you or if you are not following them. Overall you want to be very careful with who you let follow you on any social media app because regardless of who you think you may trust you do not know your followers’ friends well and if they can be malicious towards you at any time they want. People have more time than you may think in regards to being able to figure out how to hack your account or worse try to stalk your every move; sometimes even people can have a tracking device on your cell phone, and you will never know. Overall, be very careful with the social media platforms you choose to invest your time into. Be aware of your surroundings and aware of what bad people are capable of doing.

For me when I sign up for different social media platforms I first check to see if the platform is a reliable site; I know it is reliable if the site ends in edu, gov, org, and com. After that just to be extra precarious I will put the site into an app called “scamadviser”. “Scamadviser is a free website allowing people to quickly check a website they are about to buy something from.” Also, if any website, which most do ask to accept their cookies I always say no. If for some reason I am still iffy on whether or not a site is reliable I call my parents or my older brothers because they have lived much longer than I have and maybe made some mistakes with giving out too much information to a site that they would not want me making. I will ensure that the site does not ask for anything too personal such as my social security number or credit card information unless I absolutely know I can trust it. After all of the time I take to check if the social media platform I care to use is reliable I then proceed with checking my privacy settings when creating my account for the app. I put my general information in like my name and email, and then I will check off any boxes that show what privacy settings I am okay with letting the public see and which ones I would rather keep to myself privately. For example, two of the main apps that I use are Instagram and Snapchat. I am aware of what information I have agreed to share; with Instagram I keep my posts private, so that whoever follows me I would have to accept their follow request before they can see anything I post onto the app. For Snapchat I have “Ghost Mode” which does not allow the people I am following to view my current location. However, if I wanted to change these two settings from private to public I can easily do so. From the information I provide to either platform I am not interacting with any of the platforms algorithms. I simply just do not have my location set to public or my posts because I like to keep those 2 things private for only myself and the people I choose to let follow me. There are many advertisements that pop up both on my Instagram and Snapchat that many people can be intrigued to click the link to and purchase one of the products being advertised. I remember one of my friends ordered something off of an Instagram ad and he was scammed about $50 from what he purchased. I learned that not everything on social media is going to be true and that I always have to be careful even though the apps themselves are reliable. On top of this, lots of these advertisements are promoted by the popular social media platforms and it helps get their product name out there knowing that there are many people who follow each platform. “Instagram is one of the world’s top social platforms, but just how many people use Instagram today? Based on its global advertising audience reach numbers, Instagram has at least 1.440 billion users around the world in July 2022.” As far as Snapchat goes “Snapchat Has 332 Million Daily Active Users Worldwide. This is an increase from the third quarter in 2021, which had 306 million.”

During the last 24 hours I have been keeping track of the amount of time I have spent on the most used apps on my phone which are TikTok, Safari, and Snapchat. To give you an exact number of hours I have spent on each app just today that would be 2 hours and 13 minutes on TikTok, 33 minutes on Safari, and 20 minutes on Snapchat. After viewing the reality of how much time I spend on social media I had to reflect on what I am doing for the rest of my day, and why I have so much time to spend it on my phone. Completing this assignment was an eye opening moment for me to spend less time on my phone and to be engaged with the rest of the world around me including talking to more people, spending more time for myself whether that’s listening to music on a walk or hiking for a few hours. The things I discovered during my media usage was that the people I view on social media are not who they seem to be in real life and overall social media is a fabricated version of people’s actual day to day lives; people will only post the most highlighted versions of themselves. The medias listed above are the most credible sources for me because they not only provide me entertainment, but also are sometimes educational.
